COLLABORATIVE INCUBATOR - NEW ARCH
CULTURE & LEISURE , LEARNING & EDUCATION
Award-finalist, winning entry.
This project was an open international design competition for the new Aarhus School of Architecture. The school was to be placed in the heart of Aarhus, close to the railway station and the city centre, in the area where a large cultural centre, Godsbanen, was establish in 2012 in a former area for railway freight trains.
The starting point for this proposal lies in the qualities of the context; the creative hub - Godsbanen, the planned new green belt and the strong remnant and traces of the industrial past - the railway tracks that runs along the site in a South Easterly line.
The project follows the lines of the railway tracks and connects the green belt with Godsbanen. It does this through it's openness in ground floor plan.
Furthermore the openness in the ground floor plan creates valuable precious meeting places in a context, that prior had no-where to meet and hang out. This project creates 3 new places - each of which have it's own identity: A green lush park to the South - a garden between the new homes and the school and towards Godsbanen it creates an urban space emphasizing the short distance to the city.
The building is connected both visually and physically to these urban spaces and the boundaries between building and landscape are blurred. The basic plan serves as a large flexible foundation for the architectural education and houses all public activities, administration, workshops, exhibitions, canteen, library, etc. The room is a flexible hub for all common activities. In this space the city is invited in and allowed to join.
On top of the foundation a tower is placed - The incubator for future architects. In the tower all the students and scientists are housed and the tower stand strong as a landmark in the context. The tower consists of 5 floors, which are connected both visually and physically. This will be the creative hub and 'incubator' for future architects.
