THE DANISH FEMALE MUSEUM - REVITALIZATION
THE FEMALE MUSEUM
The Female Museum in Denmark is situated in the old Town Hall next to the cathedral in the heart of Aarhus.
The building was constructed in 1857 by architect and Royal Building Inspector C.G.F. Thielemann in the style of gothic renaissance.

The Female Museum is an institution that creates curiosity, dialoque and reflection upon the importance of gender in society - both historically, currently and in the future. Based on the building's status of being protected, as well as the significant architecture, we have developed a concept that respects the details, materials and colours of the house.

The primary task has been to develop the framework for the museum's exhibitions, including display of objects, lighting, signage and flow. The design creates coherence and order in the exhibition and in the building, and serves as the leading elements which, as a red thread, takes the visitor through the building. Furthermore the newly designed room furniture has been created to accomodate the functions of the rooms, while they at the same time enhances the experience of the old building.

The furniture has an overall feature of simple, yet dynamic, modern lines, creating a new space for the Female Museum, in which to re-think themselves. At the same time, the furniture draws references to the detail of the house, with brass details and carved wood panels. The furniture has been developed in close dialoque with the clients and has been designed down to every detail.

Outside, Mathilde Fibigers Garden are being transformed into a vibrant and recreational urban space with outdoor seating from the museum's popuar cafe. This space creates new opportunities for urban happenings and workshops.

The museum is currently on site.
